STACK HOUSE

NEW YORK, NY (Competition Entry)

A house, a yard, a picket fence – the ideals embodied in the “American Dream” – have long been out of reach (and for the most part impractical and unsustainable) in dense, vibrant downtown cores like New York’s. And yet, the aspiration for a space that is truly one’s own still lingers. The question in proposing new forms of urban housing thus becomes how to update and again make relevant this dream, in a world of limited resources and increasing population. The challenge inherent in this question is to distill “a great home” to its essentials, and strategically deploy these in a minimal footprint: private space, daylight, access to the outdoors, a sense of comfort, security, ownership, and community.

Stack House is a call to provide all affordable housing developments, regardless of their unit count or plot size, certain attributes and characteristics that will inherently foster a higher quality of life.

The distinct identity of the façade and massing of such housing is critical not only for individual residents to gain a sense of pride and ownership, but also for the city of New York to promote and grow its commendable and much-needed expansion of affordable housing.
